My nephew picked out this Lego set for Christmas. I couldn't find it at the Lego store or any store anywhere, so I checked online. $700 bucks are you kidding me?! Lol!! I'm guessing it's out of production. Are there any Lego aficionados out there that can shed some light on this price? I told him to go ahead and pick out a different set. Sorry buddy :(

There are people who sell Lego sets (that have just recently been discontinued) and assume that they've wildly appreciated.
$7.49 for shipping? That's a steal!
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

A few reasons.
1.It's the last one left in stock
2. It's out of production
3. It's a Creator set
4. It has nearly 1200 pieces
5. There are rare parts in it
6. It's unopened

Wow, that's a lot. But, I know once they're gone, they're gone. A Ferrari I have 1:10 Enzo is now worth big bucks . Paid about $100 when new. Though I built it, so I'll keep waiting.

Wow 1% shipping fee, that's almost as good as free!

I've found prices online for this set ranging from around $300 to around $1,300. Crazy!

Rule of thumb on LEGO: 10-15 cents a piece. Extremely specialty stuff like the Creator line, as much as double. ~1200 pieces -> possibly as much as $320 or so, but that's absolutely the max More normal would be ~$160. Discontinued + speculator = $734, absurd, but not impossible to see.

Thanks! I don't think my nephew realized it was out of production. Not sure where he saw it, I'm sure it's not in any ads. Maybe he saw it online, or maybe one of his buddies has this set.
I will make note that it's not the last one (other websites have them), but they are all sky high in price.

There are newer sets of that size (by that I mean piece count) they retail for $150.
Like this awesome set

Also that house looks good, but if I remember correctly, it had no interior. The example I pointed out is very detailed in and out.

He probably saw it in an old catalogue.

I'm afraid it's nothing as cool as that. Just a longing for my old team.

That set you linked to has nearly twice the piece count. I'm not really sure what the townhouse retailed for back when it was still available.

Original price for the town house was $70. A really good deal new. A set with that many pieces now is $100 new. There are really good sets in that range.

Thanks! A shame too, because for $70 he would have had it under the tree. :)

No problem, Lego is a great gift. Another great idea would be Erector/Meccano if you can find it.

It's one of the 1st Creator homes LEGO made. At the time no one liked it because of no interior. After new home sets, everyone wanted the 1st one and resale went way up (like real estate :P). It's really not a very interesting set, no rare parts, dumb people. You could look up the parts, buy and make 3 houses like it. Buy him a modular set like the Parisian Restaurant, Pet Shop, etc.Much more interesting sets out there.

He came up with a second choice (the Mountain Hut), which worked out great. It was very reasonably priced...and actually available on store shelves.

My favorite. I have an autographed jersey of his in a frame in my dining room.
